5/12/2025 MEDIA ADVISORY: Senate Finance Committee to meet three times this week to hear budget amendments and legislation
STATE HOUSE – The Senate Finance Committee will be meeting three times this week to hear testimony on budget amendments and a variety of legislation.
           
The committee is chaired by Sen. Louis P. DiPalma (D-Dist. 12, Middletown, Little Compton, Newport, Tiverton).
           
On Tuesday, May 13, at 3 p.m. in Room 211 of the State House, the committee will hear testimony on the following budget amendments:
Also, on Tuesday, May 13, at the Rise of the Senate (approximately 5 p.m.) in Room 211, the committee will hear testimony on several bills.
           
Among the legislation scheduled to be heard are the following bills:
  • 2025-S 0192, sponsored by Sen. Melissa Murray (D-Dist. 24, Woonsocket, North Smithfield), requires a review by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education of the formula components used to compute the aid needed to support high need students.
  • 2025-S 0657, sponsored by Sen. Brian J. Thompson (D-Dist. 20, Woonsocket, Cumberland), authorizes the tax administrator to waive interest and penalties on delinquent taxes paid in full during a one-week amnesty period.
  • 2025-S 0869, sponsored by Chairman DiPalma, creates the position of dementia services coordinator within the Department of Health to coordinate the department’s approach to Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia.
  • 2025-S 0447, sponsored by Sen, Lammis J. Vargas (D-Dist. 28, Cranston, Providence), establishes a child tax credit of $1,000 per dependent.
On Thursday, May 15, at the Rise of the Senate (approximately 5 p.m.) in Room 211, the committee will hear testimony on several bills.
           
Among the legislation scheduled to be heard are the following bills:
  • 2025-S 0424, sponsored by Sen. Hanna M. Gallo (D-Dist. 27, Cranston, West Warwick), provides that the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, in consultation with a workgroup composed of various stakeholders, develop a funding formula for school districts sending students to career and technical programs outside their district.
  • 2025-S 0451, sponsored by Sen. Peter A. Appollonio Jr. (D-Dist. 29, Warwick), exempts the sale of Bitcoin from state income tax, if such sale is valued at less than $1,000.
  • 2025-S 0669, sponsored by Sen. Jacob E. Bissaillon (D-Dist. 1, Providence), nullifies the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education’s recommendation that the turnaround plan for Providence public schools be continued.
  • 2025-S 0670, sponsored by Sen. Pamela J. Lauria (D-Dist. 32, Barrington, Bristol, East Providence), establishes the Medical Primary Care Scholarship Program to be administered by the commissioner of Postsecondary Education.
