5/19/2025 MEDIA ADVISORY: Senate Finance Committee to meet twice this week to hear presentations and legislation
STATE HOUSE – The Senate Finance Committee will be meeting twice this week to hear department presentations and legislation.
           
The committee is chaired by Sen. Louis P. DiPalma (D-Dist. 12, Middletown, Little Compton, Newport, Tiverton).
           
On Tuesday, May 20, at the Rise of the Senate (approximately 5 p.m.) in Room 211, the committee will hear a presentation from the Executive Office of Health and Human Services on the All-Payer Health Equity Approaches and Development (AHEAD) model and associated funding.  The committee will also hear testimony on several pieces of legislation.
           
Among the legislation scheduled to be heard are the following bills:
  • 2025-S 0693, sponsored by Chairman DiPalma, expands eligibility for the qualified Medicare beneficiary program by increasing the income limit from 100% to 138% of the federal poverty line.
  • 2025-S 0110, sponsored by Sen. Linda L. Ujifusa (D-Dist. 11, Portsmouth, Bristol), establishes a tax credit against income tax based on eligible expenses incurred for care and support of an eligible family member.
  • 2025-S 0171, sponsored by Sen. Brian J. Thompson (D-Dist. 20, Woonsocket, Cumberland), allows the Executive Office of Health and Human Services to use appropriated funds to support graduate medical education programs and research.
  • 2025-S 0185, sponsored by Sen. V. Susan Sosnowski (D-Dist. 37, South Kingstown), creates an income-sensitive tiered subsidy program to ensure that home energy utility costs are affordable for eligible low-income households.
  • 2025-S 0341, sponsored by Sen. Leonidas P. Raptakis (D-Dist. 33, Coventry, West Greenwich), provides a full property tax exemption for a veteran's real property used as the veteran's primary residence.
On Thursday, May 22, at 3 p.m. in Room 211, the committee will hear a presentation by the Rhode Island Department of Education on the March 2025 Student Data Update.
           
The meetings will be televised by Capitol Television on: Cox Communications, channels 15 and 61 for high definition; i3Broadband (Formerly Full Channel) on 15; and Verizon, on channel 34.  Senate committee hearings may also air on Channel 75 for Cox subscribers.  Livestreaming is available at https://capitoltvri.cablecast.tv
