6/2/2025 RIBLIA Caucus issues statement on Trump administration’s ‘sanctuary jurisdictions’ listing for Providence, Central Falls
STATE HOUSE – The Rhode Island Black, Latino, Indigenous, Asian-American and Pacific Islander (RIBLIA) Caucus released the following statement today regarding the Trump administration’s inclusion of two Rhode Island cities — Providence and Central Falls — on its list of sanctuary jurisdictions it views as standing in the way of the president’s mass deportations agenda:

“In response to the Trump administration’s listing of Providence and Central Falls as “sanctuary jurisdictions,” we in the Rhode Island Black, Latino, Indigenous, and Asian American (RIBLIA) Caucus reaffirm our unwavering solidarity with immigrant communities across our state.

“As a caucus grounded in racial justice, equity and the lived experiences of historically marginalized communities, we denounce any attempts to scapegoat immigrants. In the case of Central Falls, two court decisions uphold its compliance with federal immigration law. The decision to target these cities, and over 500 across the nation, is a deliberate and dangerous attempt to sow fear and divide our communities.

“We call on our local and state leaders to remain steadfast in upholding Rhode Island’s values of compassion, fairness, and community. We urge them to resist federal overreach that violates constitutional protections – rights that belong to all our neighbors – regardless of immigration status.

“No one should live in fear of being separated from their family or community.

“We hold deep compassion for every person currently detained at the Wyatt Detention Center, in ICE facilities across our nation, and for the families and loved ones who are suffering in their absence.

“Rhode Island is a state anchored in hope. Behind every case is a story of hope, resilience, and the pursuit of a better life, none of which should be met with punishment or confinement. The RIBLIA Caucus remains committed to advocating for policies that protect all Rhode Islanders and affirm the right of every person to live free from discrimination, displacement and fear.”
