Senate passes Mack bill that notifies tenants about housing violations
|
STATE HOUSE – The Senate today passed legislation sponsored by Sen. Tiara T. Mack that would require housing code enforcement officers to notify tenants of any housing code violations in their unit or building.
“Tenants deserve to know whether their home is safe to occupy and up to code, and if there are problems severe enough to be flagged by a housing official, tenants should absolutely be notified about the violations. Far too many of our state’s tenants are taken advantage of by unscrupulous landlords who fail to maintain their properties in a safe and quality manner, with the property owners or management often concealing the true severity of code violations within the unit. This bill will put an end to that despicable practice and it will help protect tenants who want nothing more than a safe and habitable home,” said Senator Mack (D-Dist. 6, Providence).
The legislation (2025-S 0709) would require a housing code enforcement officer to give a copy of any housing code violation notice to all tenants of the building affected by a housing code violation along with any hearing dates scheduled for the violation.
The bill now heads to the House for consideration, where Rep. Cherie L. Cruz (D-Dist. 58, Pawtucket) has introduced the legislation (2025-H 5267).
