7/28/2025 Media Advisory: State House to host Peruvian Independence Day celebration
STATE HOUSE — Rep. Jenni A. Furtado (D-Dist. 64, East Providence, Pawtucket) and Providence City Councilwoman Shelly Peterson are hosting a celebration of Peruvian Independence Day Wednesday, July 30, at 5 p.m. in the State Room on the second floor of the State House.

The event is a joyful celebration of the Fiestas Patrias peruanas, the national holidays celebrating Peru’s independence from Spain.

The hosts will present citations honoring two important members of the Peruvian community in Rhode Island: Juan Pablo Ocampo for his community advocacy on immigration policy and support services, and Elizabeth Gordon Martin for her dedication to the public parks of the City of Providence.

The event will feature a musical performance by Cesar Augusto Altamirano and Peruvian catering and refreshments.

Guests will include Sen. Robert Britto (D-Dist. 18, East Providence, Pawtucket), Rep. Earl A. Reed III (D-Dist. 26, Coventry, West Warwick, Warwick), Rep. David Morales (D-Dist. 7, Providence), Rep. Karen Alzate (D-Dist. 60, Pawtucket, Central Falls), General Treasurer James A. Diossa, Secretary of State Gregg M. Amore, Pawtucket Mayor Donald R. Grebien, Providence Mayor Brett P. Smiley and East Providence Mayor Bob DaSilva.

The daughter of first-generation Peruvian immigrants, Representative Furtado became Rhode Island’s first Peruvian American elected official when she was first elected to the East Providence School Committee in 2020 and became the first Peruvian American General Assembly member when she was elected to the House in 2024.

Councilwoman Peterson immigrated from Peru with her parents when she was a child to East Providence. The first in her family to graduate from college and first to receive a master’s degree, she also became the first Peruvian American city councilor in Rhode Island when she was elected to the Providence City Council in 2022.

The event will be televised live by Capitol Television, which can be seen on Cox channel 61, on i3Broadband channel 15 and on Verizon channel 34. It will be live streamed at capitoltvri.cablecast.tv.
