Sen. Paolino supports bill to expand personal finance education in Rhode Island public schools
|
STATE HOUSE – Sen. Thomas J. Paolino (R-Dist. 17, Lincoln, North Providence, North Smithfield) is fully supporting and co-sponsoring legislation that will expand the teaching of personal finance in Rhode Island's public high schools.
“Personal financial literacy is one of the most important skills one can have when entering adulthood, yet, we are failing our children by not requiring that they learn these important lessons and concepts. It is time that we invest in our children’s financial future and that is why I am proud to support this legislation,” said Senator Paolino.
The legislation, to be introduced by Sen. Sandra Cano (D-Dist. 8, Pawtucket), would require all public high schools to offer a class that includes personal finance beginning in the 2019-2020 school year, and would require students to demonstrate proficiency in personal finance by the 2021-2022 school year.
“The future financial health of our children and students is a bipartisan issue and I am looking forward to working with my colleagues in the Senate and the House to make sure that every Rhode Island child has the tools and knowledge necessary to make informed and responsible financial decisions once they become independent adults,” concluded Senator Paolino.
Senator Paolino introduced a similar bill (2018-S 2344) last legislative session that would have required the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to develop curricular material on financial literacy.
