Media Advisory: House Health, Human Services Committee to hear bills on health care facilities
|
STATE HOUSE – The House Health and Human Services Committee meets Thursday for hearings on numerous bills, including several concerning health care facilities.
The committee is scheduled to meet Thursday, April 9, at the rise of the House session (sometime after 4:30 p.m.) in Room 101 on the first floor of the State House. The committee is scheduled to hold hearings on bills including:

2026-H 7272, 2026-H 8203, 2026-H 7626,— Sponsored by Rep. Lauren H. Carson (D-Dist. 75, Newport), these bills are aimed at keeping the birthing center at Newport Hospital in operation. They would, respectively, prohibit the closure or significant reduction of services of a birthing center without notice, application, financial disclosure, public hearing and Department of Health approval; condition state funding or grants for Brown University Health on the continued operation of the birthing center; and establish the Rhode Island Maternal Health Improvement and Equity Act of 2026 to establish permanent statewide support for maternal health and to implement the maternal health strategic plan improving maternal health care and access.

2026-H 7721 — This bill sponsored by Rep. Kathleen A. Fogarty (D-Dist. 35, South Kingstown) would ban the corporate practice of medicine in Rhode Island.

2026-H 7538 — Sponsored by Rep. Deborah A. Fellela (D-Dist. 43, Johnston), this joint resolution would create a 15-member joint commission to study and provide recommendations regarding safe staffing ratios in hospitals.
