Caldwell named chair of House Conduct Committee
|
STATE HOUSE – House Speaker K. Joseph Shekarchi has appointed Rep. Justine Caldwell chairwoman of the House Conduct Committee.
The House Committee on Conduct is tasked with addressing any potential ethical misconduct by members of the House of Representatives. It reviews complaints against House members, holds hearings and makes recommendations on action.
“I am so honored to be entrusted to lead the Conduct Committee. Our constituents place their trust in us when they elect us to the House, and they deserve to have confidence that their representative will serve them honorably. Our committee exists to ensure that all members meet those expectations, and that we hold ourselves to the high standards that should be demanded of all public officials,” said Chairwoman Caldwell (D-Dist. 30, East Greenwich, West Greenwich).
Chairwoman Caldwell will continue to serve as a member of the House Judiciary Committee, the Small Business Committee and the Corporations Committee, where she is second vice chairwoman. She will also continue in her duties as a deputy majority leader.
First elected in November 2018, Chairwoman Caldwell has been a strong proponent of legislation to curb gun violence since her first term, having sponsored the 2022 law prohibiting high-capacity gun magazines as well as the safe storage law enacted in 2024. She has also enacted laws aimed at the opioids crisis and banning “white bagging” by insurers. She has worked on numerous efforts to improve equity in Rhode Island, as well as bills to protect the environment. In 2021, she was the sponsor of a law prohibiting new high-heat waste processing facilities, which helped to prevent a proposal to build a facility on the West Warwick-East Greenwich border to burn medical waste from around the region.
Representative Caldwell will take over the position of Conduct Committee Chairwoman from former Rep. Camille F.J. Vella-Wilkinson, who did not run for re-election in 2024.
