Media Advisory: House to vote on three housing bills tomorrow
|
STATE HOUSE – The House of Representatives is scheduled to vote tomorrow on three bills included in Speaker K. Joseph Shekarchi’s 2024 housing package.
The votes will take place during Tuesday’s House session, scheduled at 4 p.m. in the House chamber on the second floor of the State House.
Among the bill’s being put to a vote tomorrow are:

2024-H 7983A — Sponsored by Rep. Cherie Cruz (D-Dist. 58, Pawtucket), this bill would clarify the makeup and structure of the State Building Code Office, and also clarifies the role of the State Building Code Commissioner. It modifies statutory language to create a similar scope of responsibility and authority over building code issues, as the State Fire Marshal has over the fire code issues

2024-H 7982 — This bill sponsored by Rep. Terri Cortvriend (D-Dist. 72, Middletown, Portsmouth) amends provisions relative to the application of zoning ordinances pertaining to wetland buffers to projects for development, redevelopment, construction or rehabilitation. The legislation makes clear that there can be no local regulation of coastal wetlands and freshwater wetlands beyond the requirements of the state agency requirements. The legislation does not take away any responsibility from the Coastal Resources Management Council or Department of Environmental Management.

2024-H 7984A — This bill sponsored by Rep. Carol Hagan McEntee (D-Dist. 33, South Kingstown, Narragansett), allows municipalities to count mobile home units as affordable housing, if they meet certain requirements, including that they are permanent housing. Mobile homes could be applied toward the goal of 10% of a municipality’s housing stock to be low- and moderate-income housing, with ½ credit per qualifying mobile home.
The House has already approved seven other bills from the 15-bill package earlier this month and in February. Those bills have been sent to the Senate.
The session will be televised on Capitol Television, which can be seen on Cox channel 61, on i3Broadband channel 15 and on Verizon channel 34. It will be live streamed at capitoltvri.cablecast.tv.
