STATE HOUSE – Chairman of the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee Samuel A. Azzinaro led an event recognizing the 71st anniversary of the Korean War Cease-fire today at Memorial Park in Providence.

“The Korean War is often known as the Forgotten War, but we have no right to forget the thousands of Rhode Islanders that answered their nation’s call and served, or died, with honor during this conflict.  Today, as we do every year, we remember their bravery, their selflessness and their sacrifices and we pledge to always recognize these courageous Americans who defended our country and the world,” said Chairman Azzinaro (D-Dist. 37, Westerly).

Chairman Azzinaro was joined at the event by U.S. Senator Jack Reed, Congressman Gabe Amo, Senate Special Legislation & Veterans’ Affairs Committee Chairman Walter S. Felag (D-Dist. 10, Warren, Bristol, Tiverton), Gov. Daniel McKee and the Deputy Consulate of Korea in Boston Soon Bok.

Angela Sharkey, the president of the Korean American Association of Rhode Island and State Commander Richard Mende of the RI Korean War Veterans’ Council were also in attendance.

A memorial wreath provided by House Speaker K. Joseph Shekarchi (D-Dist. 23, Warwick) was laid on the Rhode Island Korean War Veterans Memorial at the conclusion of the event.
