4/24/2024 MEDIA ADVISORY: Several bills to combat drunk driving to be heard by Senate Judiciary Committee tomorrow
STATE HOUSE – Sen. Leonidas P. Raptakis (D-Dist. 33, Coventry, West Greenwich) is calling attention to several bills that will combat drunk driving which will be heard by the Senate Judiciary Committee tomorrow, April 25 at the RISE of the Senate in Room 313 of the State House.

“Every weekend, we see more news stories about drunk driving arrests at best, and at worst, more senseless tragedies resulting from selfish drivers who get behind the wheel impaired.  The time is now to pass these bills to prevent future heartbreak and loss and hold drunk drivers accountable for their despicable crimes,” says Senator Raptakis.

The following bills to be heard by the committee are part of Senator Raptakis’ multi-year efforts to eliminate drunk driving in Rhode Island:
  • 2024-S 2023, sponsored by Senator Raptakis, extends the "lookback" period for repeat offenses involving driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs under § 31-27-2 and for repeat offenses related to failure or refusal to submit to chemical tests under § 31-27-2.1 from five years to 10 years.
  • 2024-S 2025, sponsored by Senator Raptakis, would allow a judge to have discretion to allow a hardship exception to keep license plates of a person convicted of this offense.
  • 2024-S 2026, sponsored by Senator Raptakis, requires that the license plates of a vehicle be confiscated by a police officer if the owner was arrested for driving while their license was suspended, revoked or cancelled for refusing to submit to a chemical test or for operating under the influence.
  • 2024-S 2024, sponsored by Sen. David P. Tikoian (D-Dist. 22, Smithfield, North Providence, Lincoln), would increase penalties for a variety of motor vehicle offenses.
  • 2024-S 2936, sponsored by Sen. V. Susan Sosnowski (D-Dist. 37, South Kingstown), provides for a single, increased range of penalties for all driving offenses which result in serious bodily injury or death.
  • 2024-S 2666, sponsored by Sen. Mark P. McKenney (D-Dist. 30, Warwick), requires that any person convicted of a charge of DUI or refusal, have an ignition interlock before being eligible for license reinstatement.
