1/7/2025 Sen. Dimitri sworn in as General Assembly convenes
STATE HOUSE — Sen. Andrew R. Dimitri was formally sworn into the Senate today as the 2025-26 term of the Rhode Island General Assembly convened.

Senator Dimitri (D-Dist. 25, Johnston) will serve on the Senate Judiciary Committee and the Senate Labor Committee.

The Senate Judiciary Committee handles all legislation and matters that affect the penal code, judicial system, ethics, open meetings, access to public records and election laws. It also considers the gubernatorial appointments of judges and magistrates through the senatorial function of advice and consent. The Senate Labor Committee is expected to change its name to the Senate Labor and Gaming Committee and to consider laws regarding gambling and games of chance in addition to legislation relating to workers’ compensation and labor laws.

Senator Dimitri was one of six new members of the Senate who took the oath of office, which was administered to all 38 senators by Rhode Island Secretary of State Gregg M. Amore.

The Senate began its legislative year today with a program that included the reelection of Sen. Dominick J. Ruggerio (D-Dist. 4, North Providence, Providence) as the president of the Senate.

A lifelong Johnston resident, Senator Dimitri currently works as an attorney. He attended St. Rocco School in Johnston, LaSalle Academy, the University of Rhode Island and Roger Williams University School of Law.
