More senators join Mack’s call for action addressing homelessness
|
STATE HOUSE – Sen. Tiara Mack (D-Dist. 6, Providence) is thanking her colleagues in the Rhode Island Senate for urging Governor Dan McKee to take emergency action to address homelessness.
Senator Mack and other legislators sent a letter to the governor last week that emphasized the importance of immediate action to save lives and also called on the governor to address Rhode Island’s housing crisis using the resources provided by the General Assembly to the executive branch.
“I thank my colleagues in the Senate for joining us in calling for an emergency executive action to address the homelessness crisis in Rhode Island. And make no mistake, what we are witnessing is indeed a public health emergency, one that is growing by the day and is seeing our residents freezing to death on our own streets and public spaces. Time is of the essence, and definitive and decisive action must be taken to protect the health and well-being of the vulnerable unhoused population. We are pleading with the governor to do what is right and protect the unhoused by acknowledging the severity of the situation by using his executive powers. Too many lives have already been needlessly lost and if we don't act now, many more lives will be extinguished in the days and weeks to come,” said Senator Mack.
All members of the Democrat Caucus in the Senate, including leadership, have now echoed the severity of this issue to the governor.
“I thank Senate leadership for recognizing the severity of this important issue and for joining us by calling for immediate action from the governor. The planned Housing and Municipal Government and Government Oversight joint committee meeting will also help get to the bottom of what is delaying action to assist the unhoused, who are suffering on the street on a daily basis. It’s clear from the overwhelming support of the Rhode Island Senate that we cannot delay this emergency declaration any longer,” added Senator Mack.
